FRENCH I                 COLLEGE PREP                 613                 5 credits
This course serves as an introduction to the French language and culture in which an integrated and
communicative approach are utilized in order to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Vocabulary and grammatical structures are presented and used in real life contexts through a variety of
activities encompassing all four skills. Awareness of the cultures of the francophone world is implicitly and
explicitly included in the learning of French through continual thematic presentation of the people, their
culture, their language and heritage.
Note: A prerequisite grade of 70 or a teacher recommendation is required to advance to the next level.

FRENCH II                 COLLEGE PREP                   623               5 credits
This course is a continuation of the skills development begun in French I with a furthering of the student’s
ability to understand and to communicate within real life situations. Review of vocabulary and grammatical
structures learned in French I along with exposure to new vocabulary, more verb tenses, and more
grammatically complex concepts allow for further practice in the classroom, culminating in a wider variety
of opportunities for personal expression. Culture remains an essential aspect of the course and is integrated
within language instruction and through the presentation of videos, readings and discussion.

FRENCH III             COLLEGE PREP                     633                5 credits
This course has a balanced focus on the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French. Each unit
contains a culture, conversation, journalism and literature section. Students are introduced to francophone
literature from a variety of periods. All skills are integrated into each class.

FRENCH IV             HONORS                              644                 5 credits
This course builds upon the vocabulary and grammar learned in all previous levels leading to improved oral
and written communication. The reading and discussion of short stories and poems offer opportunities for
students to express opinions and ideas while interacting with fellow students in the language. Opportunities
to express oneself both orally and in writing are provided with the main intent being that of negotiating
meaning in as comprehensible a manner as possible with as much grammatical accuracy as possible.
Note: A prerequisite grade of 70 or a teacher recommendation is required to advance to the next level.

FRENCH V             HONORS                               654                 5 credits
This course will emphasize the written and spoken French from which speaking strategies for everyday
communication will be used. Students will attempt to analyze, interpret, and understand literary passages
through composition, discussion, and essays.

SPANISH I            COLLEGE PREP                       663                 5 credits
This course serves as an introduction to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture in which an integrated
and communicative approach are utilized in order to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and
writing. Vocabulary and grammatical structures are presented and used in real life contexts through a
variety of activities encompassing all four skills. Awareness of the cultures of the Hispanic World are
implicitly and explicitly included in the learning of Spanish through continual thematic presentation of the
people, their language and their culture.

This course provides an intensive review and refinement of vocabulary and grammatical concepts learned
in the initial introductory Spanish courses. Additional vocabulary and grammatical concepts are presented
and practiced contextually. The functional use of the language is stressed and opportunity for personal
open-ended expression is maximized within class time. Written expression becomes more significant with
commentary on articles and advertisements and self-expression through journal entries on a regular basis.
Culture remains integrated in daily lessons and through readings and short stories throughout the year.

SPANISH V       HONORS                                  694                   5 credits
This course stresses the use of Spanish for active communication with the following objectives: 1) the
ability to comprehend formal and informal spoken Spanish; 2) the acquisition of vocabulary and a grasp of
structure to allow for the easy, accurate reading of newspaper articles and magazine articles as well as of
modern literature in Spanish; 3) the ability to compose expository passages; and 4) the ability to express
ideas orally with accuracy and fluency. The course seeks to develop language skills that can be applied to
various activities and disciplines rather than to the mastery of any specific subject matter.
