Typing Accent Marks
On a PC with a number pad on the side:
- Make sure NUM LOCK is on
- Hold down the ALT key
- Type the code for the accented letter you want
à = ALT 133 á = ALT 160 â = ALT 131 |
è = ALT 138 é = ALT 130 ê = ALT 136 ë = ALT 0235 |
í = ALT 161 î = ALT 140 |
ó = ALT 162 ô = ALT 147 |
ù = ALT 151 ú = ALT 163 û = ALT 150 |
ç = ALT 135 ñ = ALT 164 |

In Microsoft Word:
- The ALT codes listed above work in Microsoft Word, but there is an alternate method explained below
á é í ó ú - Press and hold the [CTRL] key and the ['] key, then release both. Then type the vowel you want to be accented (lower or upper case).
à è ù - Press and hold the [CTRL] key and the [~] key, then release both. Then type the vowel you want to be accented (lower or upper case).
â ê î ô û - Press and hold the [CTRL] key, [SHIFT] key, and the [6] key, then release. Then type the vowel you want to be accented .
ñ - Press and hold the [CTRL] key, [SHIFT] key, and the [~] key. Then type n or N.
ç - Press and hold the [CTRL] key and the [,] key. Then type c or C.
ë - Press and hold the [CTRL] key, [SHIFT] key, and the [;] key, then release. Then type e. This also works for any letter with an umlaut.
¿ - Press and hold the [CTRL] key, [ALT] key, [SHIFT] key, and the [?] key, then release. Then type ?.
¡ - Press and hold the [CTRL] key, [ALT] key, [SHIFT] key, and the [!] key, then release. Then type !.
On a Mac:
On an iPhone or iPad:
- You can type accent marks on an iPhone or iPad by
simply holding down the letter or punctuation mark you want to add the
accent to. A row of accented versions of the letter will pop up.
To select the accented letter you want, keep holding your finger down and slide it across the screen. Remove your finger from the screen when the accented letter you want is highlighted.
